Axel Danielson & Maximilien Van Aertryck - A push for more media literacy

When we first interviewed them for Short Talks in 2016, the two Swedish directors Axel Danielson & Maximilien Van Aertryck already described to us the core concept and even entire scenes that would later grow into their feature-length film And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine.

With this film, the two just recently won the 2023 Jury Award for Creative Vision in the category World Cinema Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival and were later honored at the Berlinale with a special mention in the category Generation 14plus.

On their return to Berlin, we were able to continue our conversation about the power of visual media and the longing for more lively discourse in cinema almost seamlessly seven years later.
